Daughter of Smoke & Bone - Laini Taylor Well, first of all, I hate "Romeo & Juliet" stories. It took me 10 years to watch West Side Story again after I watched it the first time. Somehow, though, Laini makes it so I just don't care. This story was original, amazing and beautifully written in THIRD PERSON! The thing about 3rd person is, you can get so much richer descriptive language. Because let's face it, when you're observing something in the world, you don't think to yourself, "his voice was rough and soft at the same time, like a blues singer's mix of gravel and silk". No, you do not.I also thoroughly enjoyed reading from the perspective of the male love interest in this story. Again, so often, stories are all from the girl's perspective, leaving you with no idea as to what is going on in the guy's head. I'm sorry to say, this was one of the drawbacks for me in ANGELFALL by Susan Ee. In fact, I loved this book so much, that I venture if I'd read it first instead Angelfall and GIFTS OF THE BLOOD by Vicki Keire, both of those books would have gotten 4 stars. Because that's what Laini Taylor does. She takes some very common (and sometimes popular) story and turns it upside down. Black is White and White becomes Black. And every time she does it, I am haunted and pea green with envy of her talent. Her characters in this book were so well drawn that I think I would know them if I met them on the street. The story was amazing, well laid out, perfectly arranged and just enough to lead me through every feeling: happiness, love, longing, loss, anger, horror... So I guess, even though Romeo and Juliet isn't my style, Laini can break through all my pet peeves and give me hope that I will love all those well worn cliches and story lines again. I wonder what she'd do with vampires.
